The Groove-Billed Barbet.
(Genus: Pogonorhynchus)
The barbets are brilliantly coloured little birds which inhabit the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and America. There are over a hundred species, many of which are remarkable for the large stout beaks. The Groove or Tooth-billed Barbet is a West African bird, and as its name indicates, its mandibles are scarred with several deep slanting grooves. The lower which is also toothed, is partially obscured by a number of long black bristles. These birds which are related to the Woodpeckers, hardly ever descend to the ground, spending their days among trees and bushes where they feed on fruit and insects.
