The Plait-billed Hornbill. (Rhytidocerus undulatus.)
In this species the beak is not of the extravagant type carried by some of the other Hornbills, but is none the less very remarkable. It consists of a series of raised horny bars with the hollows between them coloured brown to throw them into relief, the colour scheme being repeated on the lower mandible, where however, the buff lines are not raised. In addition, the base of the lower mandible is coloured lemon yellow. The male bird has a broad ring of pink skin round the eye, the throat of the female being coloured bright blue. The Plait-billed Hornbill inhabits the Malayan forests.
