The American Jabiru. (Mycteria Americana.)
The true Jabiru is a large American bird belonging to the Stork family, which inhabits the warmer parts of America from the Argentine as far north as Texas. It is about five feet high and has pure white plumage with black head and legs. The long and massive beak is also black. This huge weapon enables the Jabiru to deal effectively with the fish, reptiles and other creatures on which it feeds. The head is bare except for a scrubby tuft of hair on the crown, the neck being also bare and black; on the lower part however, there is a red band which the bird is able to distend.
