Knob-billed Fruit Pigeon.
(Ptilopus insolitus.)
The numerous Pigeon family has representatives in most parts of the world. Many of the more brilliantly coloured are inhabitants of the Malay Archipelago and Australasia. The Knob-billed Pigeon, one of the Fruit Pigeons, is confined to three islands in the Pacific Ocean, namely, Duke of York Island, New Britain and New Ireland. Unlike the typical Pigeons, these birds live in the tops of trees where they feed on fruit. The Knob-billed Fruit Pigeon has gorgeous plumage, green above with grey on wings and tail and orange underneath; its attractions being enhanced by the fleshy knob at the base of its beak.
