The Thick-billed Raven.
(Corvultsur crassirostris.)
The Raven is the largest of the Crow family and also the largest of the passerine or perching birds. In the species depicted, the beak is unusually heavy and strongly constructed, the mandible being deep and considerable arched. This bird is found in North Eastern Africa, the specimen shown having been obtained in Abyssinia. To a large extent, the Raven feeds on carrion, but it varies its diet with many other things, such as mice, frogs, reptiles, fish, shell-fish and beetles. It has also a weakness for the eggs of other birds, and sometimes attacks dying or injured birds and animals, even including, at times, young lambs.
